Why can I read something and still not be able to explain it?

Because understanding feels like a smooth reading experience, and that feeling lies. Familiar words flow easily, and your brain books that ease as knowledge. The gap only shows up when you have to produce the explanation, which is why it feels like the words were there a minute ago and gone the moment someone asks.

Recognition and understanding ride different systems, and reading mostly exercises recognition. Nothing in the reading experience itself tells you the difference, which is why the gap keeps surprising you: the smoothness of the page is a feeling about the reading, not a report on the memory.

Why does easy reading feel like understanding?

Because ease is a cue, not a verdict. Cognitive scientists call it the fluency illusion: how smoothly words move through your mind gets misread as how well you know them. Smooth prose, familiar vocabulary, and clean formatting all inflate the sense of knowing, even when nothing new was actually encoded.

In Oppenheimer's 2008 review of fluency research, ease of processing influenced judgments of truth, liking, and familiarity across a wide range of tasks. Recognition rides the same signal. Whittlesea (1993) demonstrated "illusions of familiarity," where prior exposure made people feel they knew something, and Kelley and Lindsay (1993) showed that the ease of retrieving a memory becomes the confidence in it. "I've seen this before" reliably masquerades as "I know this." You are not stupid. The cue is simply the wrong one for the judgment you are making, and every smooth page of well-written text keeps feeding it.

Why does the gap show up when I try to explain it?

Because producing an explanation forces the causal model to assemble, and that is where shallow encoding shows. In 2002, Rozenblit and Keil found people rated their understanding of everyday mechanisms around 7 out of 10, then dropped closer to 4 when they had to explain one.

In their twelve studies on the illusion of explanatory depth, participants explained devices like a zipper, a flush toilet, and a cylinder lock. Nearly all re-rated their understanding lower after producing a real step-by-step explanation, and the illusion was strongest for explanatory knowledge: the stuff you are expected to reproduce, not just recognize. Reading a description builds the same surface familiarity. You did not lose the information. You never built it in a form that could come back out.

Why do I forget even after rereading?

Because rereading is recognition, and recognition feels like mastery without building it. The classic test: students who reread a science passage repeatedly recalled 40 percent of its idea units a week later, while students who read once and took three recall tests recalled 61 percent. The rereaders were also the most confident.

That is Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 test-enhanced learning study: same material, same total study time, only the strategy differed. The rereaders predicted the highest week-later recall and performed worst. The fluency illusion does not just miscalibrate you. It protects itself, because the confident reader sees no reason to test. If it feels learned, you do not check.

Why does reading a summary feel like knowing the book?

Because a summary hands you the product of comprehension without the process. You get the gist, the takeaways, the bottom line, and none of the generative work that makes understanding stick. The same fluency that rereading exploits now arrives pre-chewed, at scale, and it feels exactly like having read the thing.

Cognitive scientist Amanda Kavner put it precisely: the most dangerous thing AI can give you is not a wrong answer, it is the feeling that you now understand well enough to stop thinking. Summary culture is being marketed as a productivity win. A post going around today literally recommends reading a 25-page summary instead of the 400-page book. Same mechanism as rereading: high fluency, zero generation, confident forgetting. The difference is scale. An entire reading diet can now consist of someone else's gist, and your own retrieval never gets the repetitions that build the model.

How do I actually keep what I read?

You need to generate, not just recognize. In a 1994 study, students prompted to self-explain each line of a text gained more understanding than students who read the same text twice, and the high self-explainers built correct mental models where unprompted readers did not. The fix is a generation habit, not a personality change.

The research that explains the failure also names the fix. Chi, de Leeuw, Chiu and LaVancher's 1994 study prompted students to explain each sentence of a passage on the human circulatory system; they gained more than students who read the same text twice, and the high explainers all built the correct mental model. Concrete moves that take seconds:

- After any page that matters, explain it out loud for thirty seconds. If you cannot, you were recognizing, not understanding. - Before you turn the page, predict what happens next. Cover the paragraph, guess, uncover. If you cannot predict, you were watching words go by. - Write one paragraph in your own words before moving on. Retrieval and generation beat re-exposure every time. - In meetings, run the "what happens next" check on the proposal before you nod. It is the same test, and it is the one that exposes ideas nobody can actually defend.
