Backward eye movements make up about 10 to 15 percent of all saccades in reading, and comprehension-driven ones return to words you have already fixated. The eyes re-collect what the brain dropped. Why do I re-read to check even when I already read the sentence correctly?

Sometimes the re-read is not an attention failure. Some readers process the sentence fine and still go back, because the brain demands proof.
