Why can't I focus on long-form reading anymore?
Mostly because your daily environment trains frequent switching while long-form reading demands sustained attention that accumulates meaning across pages. Your reading ability is probably still there, but your endurance gets little practice. Notifications, tabs, and feed habits make every return more expensive. Protected reading sessions can rebuild that stamina gradually.
That distinction matters. If you can understand a difficult paragraph when you slow down, your comprehension has not vanished. The breakdown happens across time. By page five, you have checked a message, opened a link, or felt the urge to find faster stimulation. Each restart forces you to recover the argument before you can extend it.
The wider behavior trend supports a disuse explanation without proving that any one app caused it. A study of 20 years of the American Time Use Survey found that the share of Americans reading for pleasure on an average day fell from about 28 percent in 2004 to 16 percent in 2023. The researchers reported a roughly 3 percent annual decline in participation. We practice long reading less, so it should not be surprising when it feels harder.
Is your attention span actually broken?
Probably not. The famous 47-second figure measures how long people remain on one screen before switching, not the maximum time a human mind can focus. People still become absorbed in books, games, and demanding projects. The evidence points toward a distraction-rich environment and practiced behavior, not a permanently damaged attention system.
Psychologist Gloria Mark has tracked workplace screen behavior for more than two decades. In an American Psychological Association interview, she described average screen time before switching falling from about two and a half minutes in 2004 to 75 seconds in 2012, then about 47 seconds in recent years. Other researchers produced similar results.
It does not mean your focus lasts 47 seconds. It means an interruption-friendly setup keeps winning bids for your attention. That diagnosis is useful because you can change the setup and practice a different behavior.
Your capacity to focus is not the same as your habit of switching.
What does constant tab-switching cost your comprehension?
Every switch creates a reconstruction cost. You must remember where you stopped, recover the author's point, and reload the details needed to interpret the next sentence. A feed hides this penalty because each item stands alone. Long-form writing exposes it because later ideas depend on what you carried forward from earlier pages.
Picture a strategy memo that defines a market in section one, narrows the assumptions in section two, and recommends an investment in section three. If you switch away repeatedly, you may understand every sentence yet miss how the recommendation depends on those earlier constraints. The visible cost is a few seconds. The real cost is the thread you failed to rebuild.
Screens can add another disadvantage when the material is dense. A 2018 meta-analysis of 54 studies and 171,055 participants found a small paper advantage for comprehension, especially under time pressure and for informational texts. It also found greater overconfidence among screen readers. That does not make phones useless for reading, but it does challenge the assumption that every medium produces the same depth.
How can you rebuild deep-reading stamina?
Start with ten device-free minutes a day and finish at a natural stopping point. Use paper or a distraction-free reader for dense material, keep your phone out of reach, and add two minutes after a week that feels manageable. Measure whether you can explain the argument, not how many pages you cleared.
Try this progression:
1. Choose one article, report, or chapter that matters enough to deserve full attention. 2. Remove alerts and spare tabs before starting. Do not rely on resisting them mid-session. 3. Set ten minutes, then read without checking messages or looking up optional side points. 4. Stop at a paragraph or section boundary rather than in the middle of an idea. 5. Write one sentence from memory: "The author's main point so far is..." 6. Add two minutes the following week if you can hold and restate the thread.
The recall sentence keeps this from becoming a staring contest. It tests whether attention produced understanding. If your summary is vague, return to the exact point where the logic broke instead of rereading the entire section. That makes the session active while keeping the workload small enough to repeat tomorrow.

AI can fit the same boundary. Read and state the argument before asking for a summary, then use the model to compare interpretations or expose missing details. You still get the speed advantage, but you do not outsource the exact mental work you are trying to practice.
