Why does my mind wander in the middle of a page I'm supposedly reading?
Because reading is the one task your brain can complete while it is somewhere else. Your eyes advance on habit while your mind leaves without a signal, and researchers estimate roughly 30% of reading time is spent off the page. You rarely catch the moment of leaving, so the page ends and nothing gets stored.
A student on r/GetStudying, staring at a textbook with an exam in three days, described it exactly: "I've read the same paragraph five times now, and I couldn't tell you a single thing it said. Like, my eyes are moving across the words, but nothing is going into my brain." Notice the order: the eyes moved, nothing entered, and the realization arrived late. That late arrival is the whole problem.
Reading is uniquely drift-prone because it is internally driven. A conversation pulls you back with a voice, a video pulls you back with motion, but a page makes no sound and nothing external interrupts. What the eyes do while the mind is gone is documented. Why do I never notice myself leaving the page?
Because leaving the page is a dissociation between experiencing something and knowing you are experiencing it. In the research this is the testing effect: in Roediger and Karpicke's experiments, students who retrieved a passage recalled 61% of it a week later, against 40% for students who reread it, even though the rereaders spent more time with the text.
How do I actually catch my mind wandering mid-page?
Build a checkpoint you cannot miss: one line in your own words at the end of each paragraph. If you cannot produce it, you have just found the exact sentence where you left. Drift becomes visible the moment you demand output, because output forces the re-entry your eyes will never do on their own.
